Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Dudley, Worcestershire, he served as a Troop Sergeant Major in the 17th Lancers, Duke of Cambridge's Own, British Army. On October 25, 1854, at Balaclava, Crimea, known as "The Charge of the Light Brigade" Sergeant Major Berryman's horse had been killed under him, stopped on the field amidst a storm of shot and shell. Rising to his feet, he helped two other sergeants move a severely wounded officer out of range of the enemy's guns. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria at Hyde Park, London, on June 26, 1857. While serving in India, he married Eliza Enwright (age 30) on 14 Jan 1861 in Masulipatam, Madras, India (her father was William Enwright). She died of cholera, Jan. 15, 1865, as recorded on the ship "Middlesex." He died in Woldingham, Surrey.
