William V. Barnard, age 62, of Rome,(NY) passed away peacefully at home on July 19, 2010, with his loving family at his side, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 30, 1948, in Rome, a son of Vincent and Shirley Sexton Barnard, and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1966. Bill was united in marriage to the former Sandra Walters on September 8, 1979 at the First Presbyterian Church. He was a corrections officer at Midstate Correctional Facility, retiring in 2008, due to illness. He was a member of the Galliano Club.

Bill enjoyed sports and was an avid bowler and golfer. He loved riding his motorcycle with his wife Sandra and has great memories of road trips and friends he made over the years. His true love was his family and granddaughter, Claire. Bill proudly attended all of Claire's soccer games and musical concerts.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Sandra; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Kevin Fiore of Rome; a sister, Joan Zuzolo of Spring Valley; beloved granddaughter, Claire; a niece and nephews, Jenna, Kevin and Andy Zuzolo; and many great friends and co-workers.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 10:30 a. m. at Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Thursday 4 to 8 p. m.

The family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. John Gullo, Dr. Linda Schicker and Dr. Anthony Cotronea and their staffs, and Hospice and Palliative Care and his nurse, Jane Nieman for the wonderful care, compassion and friendship extended to Bill during his illness.
