Corrections Officer Casimiro Pomales was killed in an automobile accident as he and another officer transported an inmate to a medical appointment.

Officer Pomales was driving a prison van on the New York State Thruway, near Ulster, when it was sideswiped by another car. The impact caused the van to overturn. Officer Pomales, the other officer, and the inmate were transported to Kingston Hospital where Officer Pomales was pronounced dead.

Officer Pomales had served with the New York State Department of Correctional Services for over 22 years and was assigned to the Eastern Correctional Facility. He is survived by his wife and several grown children.

Casimiro M. "Maxi" Pomales, 52, a longtime resident of the area, died suddenly on Friday, January 28, 2011, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on the N.Y.S. Thruway. He was on duty as a N.Y.S. Corrections Officer at the time of the accident.

Mr. Pomales was born in Philadelphia, PA, a son of Casimiro and Wanda Wineburg Pomales. Maxi was employed by N.Y.S. Department of Corrections at Eastern Correctional Facility for the past 22 years. Maxi was also a U.S. Navy veteran. He loved to travel, loved and was a friend to everyone, and was always there to help anyone in need. He especially loved his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving partner of 20 years, Victoria Bangert; his children: Casimiro Pomales, Maximino J. Pomales, Zanneya Pomales, all of Kerhonkson; his stepchildren: Michael Bangert of Wawarsing, Melissa Bangert of Long Island, and Eric Bangert of Warwarsing. He is also survived by a sister, Jacquilanda Pomales-Moody of Raleigh, NC; a half-brother, William Stewart of Philadelphia, PA; 12 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 3, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the George J. Moylan Funeral Home, Inc., 2053 Route 32, Rosendale. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, February 4, at the funeral home. Cremation will be private at Wiltwyck Cemetery in Kingston.

All are welcome to a Memorial Service, which will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 5, at Unity Hall, Berme Road, Napanoch.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148.
