PLATTSBURGH — Russell Watts Clark, 91, of the Vilas Home, died on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at his residence surrounded by his loved ones.

Russell was born in Altona, N.Y., on Aug. 17, 1920, son of Casper and Gladys Watts Clark. He graduated from Ellenburg High School. He served in World War II in the First Army Signal Corps under the direction of General Omar Bradley in Northern Europe.

In 1945, he married Marjorie Blair of Mooers, N.Y., the mother of his four children. Russell worked as a correction officer at Clinton Correction Facility in Dannemora, retiring in August 1974, after more than 27 years of service. After the death of Marjorie, in 1978, he married Frances L. Bleau, whom he was married to for the past 25 years.

Russell was well known in the community and was a member of the Plattsburgh United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 838, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 125, Elks, BPOE 62, and Masonic Fraternal Lodge 155 where he served as Chaplain for 20 years. He was a former trustee of Riverside Cemetery in Plattsburgh and was a founding member of the North Country Square Dancers.

Russell was a hard worker, working a second job to provide extras such as vacations and music and dance lessons for his children. He was especially proud that all four of his children graduated from college. He was friendly and no matter where he went, he made a new friend or saw an old acquaintance. He was a true gentleman, genuine in every respect, was well loved and will be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Clark of Plattsburgh; one son and daughter-in-law, Gregg and Nancy Clark of Springboro, Ohio: three daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Dann O'Donnell of East Syracuse, Karen and Sam Sato, of Tucson, Ariz., and Diane and Greg Horeth of Winfield, Ill; his sisters, Maude Vartuli, of Oneonta, N.Y., and Claire Supernaw of Ocean View, Del.; two sisters-in-law, Esther Bushey and her husband, Clarence of Plattsburgh, and Marion O'Hara and her husband, John of Plattsburgh; 10 grandchildren, 4½ great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie Blair Clark; one brother, Calvin Clark; and one sister, Ella White.

The family wishes to express special thanks to the staff at the Vilas Home and to Hospice of the North Country for their loving care of Russell.

Calling hours will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home, 69 Court St., Plattsburgh, N.Y.

The Masons will meet at the funeral home for a 3 p.m. service. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, at the Plattsburgh United Methodist Church.

Burial with military honors will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Plattsburgh.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Hospice of the North Country or to the Board of Trustees, Plattsburgh United Methodist Church.
