Upon retiring from the Navy as a Commander and settling in San Diego at the end of 1962, Bill and Marianne contracted with American Express traveling San Diego, Imperial and Orange counties together. This work brought them closer as they worked and traveled in the morning and played golf in the afternoon. They bought property in the riverside hamlet of Elk Bend, Idaho and established a second home sharing time with their home in San Diego. Dad loved his garden in Idaho where he grew everything from asparagus to peaches. Between the garden, playing bridge, fishing, wildlife viewing, and entertaining visitors, time passed quickly for Marianne and Bill. After more than 20 years of trips to and from Idaho the journey became too difficult and San Diego was once again their full time residence.
Bill is survived by sons James (Sandie) and children Joel, Robert, Alyssa, Andrew, and Rachel; David (Sharri) and children, Nicole and Casey; Larry (Elvira) and children, Joshua and Jonathan; daughter Judy (Barbara) and one great-grandchild, Noah Daniel. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Marianne, who passed away on June 27, 2004. He was able to remain in his home after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease with the assistance of his wonderful caregivers Maria, Cassandra, Beatriz (Betty), Nicole, Irma and Martha.
Bill will be interred at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, alongside Marianne after a Navy Honor Guard ceremony on January 23, 2012, at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ruby Fund at Alpha Omicron Pi Foundation, 5390 Virginia Way, Brentwood, TN 37027.
