British Royal Navy Admiral. Born in Kensington, London, he was educated at Malvern College and joined the Royal Navy as a Special Entry Cadet in 1926. At the start of World War II, he was a Lieutenant Commander on the destroyer HMS Glasgow, where he fought in the Norwegian Campaign and the Battle of the Atlantic. In 1943, he was promoted Commander, then Captain in 1947 and commanded the HMS Captain D of the 8th Destroyer Squadron in Cossack. During the Korean War, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his service and was commanding the Cadet Training Ship HMS Triumph when she was flagship of the first group of ships to visit the Soviet Union. Promoted Rear Admiral in 1957, he served as Chief of Staff to Commander and Chief of Portsmouth, before becoming Second in Command of the Far East Station. In May 1960, he was Vice Admiral and Lord Commissioner, of the Admiralty holding the post of Vice-Chief of Naval Staff. Promoted Admiral of the Fleet in August 1968, Chief of Naval Staff and First Sea Lord, and was appointed Governor of Gibraltar in 1969. He was a widely respected as a wise and statesmanlike governor, just before his retirement in 1974, was made Knight of the Order of St. John. He died at age 86 in Hampshire, England.
