By a letter from Benj. F. Northcott, Lieutenant Colonel of the 73d regiment, Illinois volunteers, we learn that Captain Edwin Alsop, company F, was killed in the battle of Murfreesboro. The letter conveying the intelligence of his death says: "He was shot through the heart, and had only time to say, "God help me!" and expired, Dec. 31st, 1862."

He was the son of Mr. Thomas Alsop, long a resident of our city, now residing at Elkhart, in Logan county, and at the day of his death was 21 years, 2 months and 4 days old.

He enlisted as a private in the 73d regiment, Col. Jaquess. When the company was organized, he was promoted to the second lieutenancy. After they arrived at Nashville, upon Col. Shafer's taking command of their Brigade, Liet. Alsop was, upon the recommendation of Col. Jaquess, put upon his staff as aid-de-camp, which position he held till within about one week of his death, when upon the resignation of Capt. Montgomery, he was appointed captain in his stead by the unanimous vote of the company. The officers of the regiment, in their letter to his father, speak of him in the highest terms of respect and confidence. To those who knew him, it will be no matter of surprise that he so readily won the esteem and rose in the confidence of the officers and men of the regiment. It was the natural result of his modest, gentle, and manly qualities.

From his childhood he had always been an affectionate and dutiful son, a warm, generous and truthful friend, and what cannot be overlooked in such times as this, a heart of brave and unconditional loyalty in the Government and liberties of his country. He entered the public service from a deep and abiding conviction that it was a duty he sacredly owed to his country and to his God. He was not moved by the desire of gain, or the hope of the honors of military life, much less from the love of adventure. His wish was to remain at home to assist his father, and enjoy the blessings of the domestic circle, but he listened to the call of his country in the hour of her peril. He went to the altar of his country, which he regarded as the altar of God, and there poured out his life a sacrifice, and we cherish the consoling hope that He who hears the ravens when they cry-to whom his last words, "God help me," were sent up-received his departing spirit, to be forever associated with the redeemed from "Earth's rebellion," whose grateful loyalty to the King of Kings is their crown of glory.
