In 1860, he was a farmer living in Straban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 7" tall with brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg June 16, 1863, with Bell's Cavalry, a militia unit that mustered into federal service June 23 as Co. B, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa). David served at the rank of private until honorably discharged with his company February 20, 1864. When the regiment reorganized as a three-year unit, David opted to remain a civilian. However, he enlisted in Gettysburg January 26, 1864, mustered into state service at Harrisburg August 7 as a private with Warren's Independent Cavalry Militia Company. Promoted to sergeant to date August 16, he honorably discharged with the company November 30, 1864. His brother James served with him.

He never married and in November 1865 moved to Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, where he lived the rest of his life.

Stricken suddenly, David Cassatt Brinkerhoff, 81 years old, died at 7:17 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of his brother, George M. Brinkerhoff. Mr. Brinkerhoff had been a resident of Springfield for more than fifty years and his sudden death was a shock to his many friends, although his health had not been the best for some time. Burial will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Mr. Brinkerhoff was born Dec. 7, 1841, at Gettysburg, Pa. He served in the Civil war, participating in the battle of Gettysburg. At the close of the war he came to Springfield to reside. Decedent was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, the G. A. R., Knights of Pythias, and the Westminster Presbyterian church. He is survived by three brothers, George M., with whom he resided; James W. of Ottawa, Kas., and Joseph B. of Spokane, Wash.
