SURMONS WINSTON-SALEM - Carlton Leon "CL" Surmons March 5, 1939 - July 8, 2011 Mr. Carlton Leon "CL" Surmons, 72, of Winston-Salem passed away at his home on Friday, July 8, 2011. He was born March 5, 1939 in Durham, NC, the son of Joshua Elijah Surmons and Bessie Parrish Surmons. Mr. Surmons retired from R.J. Reynolds after 36 years of service. He was an Air Force veteran and a devoted member of Shepherds Chapel. Mr. Surmons loved golf and was an avid NASCAR fan. He loved his family and grandkids. But most of all, he enjoyed studying and teaching God's Word. In addition to his parents, Mr. Surmons is preceded in death by his son, Cody Lee Surmons, and a brother, James Surmons. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dody Surmons; sons, Ken Surmons and wife Terri, and Brandon Surmons and wife Jenny; a sister, Judy S. Booe and husband Lonnie G. Booe, Sr.; and grandchildren, Kristy and Brittany Surmons, Josh and Spencer Justice, Casey Lee Anderson and husband Joey, Emily and Brett Surmons, and T.J. Bullard; as well as several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Monday, July 11, 2011 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
