Sandra Hagans Butler was born March 10, 1947 in Wilson, NC. She was suddenly called home by God on Friday, July 23, 2010. Sandra was the daughter of Richard Burney and Gertie Mae Burney. She was a graduate of Atkins High School and attended Winston-Salem State University. She was a meticulous and devoted employee of 32 years for RJ Reynolds America. Sandra was an active member of Messiah Community Christian Church, where she was a part of the Prison Ministries and served wherever the church needed her. She devoted countless hours and was a financial supporter of the Salvation Army, Crisis Control Ministries, United Way, and Goodwill Industries. In 2000 she received an award of appreciation from Governor Jim Hunt for her volunteer services. Sandra loved and supported her family and believed in enjoying life and all the things God blessed her with. Her door and her heart were always open to her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Janice Butts. Sandra is survived by her husband and best friend of 38 years, Charles Butler; and her daughter Charlette who was her most prized possession; two sisters, Evelyn and Charlene Burney; nephews, Troy, Joshua, and John; niece, Angela Burney; aunt, Mary Akinyemi; brothers-in-law, James and Jesse Butler; sisters-in-law, Deloris Butler, Rosa Shepherd, Alberta Wilson, and Traci Smith; close family members and devoted friends, Ernest and Patricia Gary, Catherine Butler, Maebrel Vance, and Leenola Nesbitt; as well as a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and co-workers. Funeral services for Sandra will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 30, 2010 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
