Obituary in The Shreveport Times September 28, 2016:
A memorial service celebrating the life of Daniel Joseph Smith, 82, will be held at Couch Chapel of The First United Methodist Church of Shreveport on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Dr. Pat Day and Dr. Carl Rhoads will be officiating. A visitation and reception in the Couch Parlor will follow the service.

Dan was born in Overton, Texas to DeWitt M. Smith and Sara Rogers Smith on January 1, 1934. He passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Highland Hospital, in Shreveport, Louisiana. Dan grew up in Shreveport, graduating from Fair Park High School. He was always proud of Fair Park, where he was honored to serve as Student Body President. He then attended Louisiana Tech where he was an active member of Pi Kappa Alpha. He later transferred to Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge before joining the United States Air Force. He served as a navigator on a WB 50 aircraft in a weather reconnaissance wing. Dan was stationed at RAF Alconbury, England for the next four years. It was there that he met one of the teachers at the Base Dependents School, Betty Crews Smith. Dan and Betty were married in the summer of 1960, and recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. While still in England, their first son, Daniel Crews Smith was born. On completion of his military service, Dan and Betty returned to L.S.U. Baton Rouge where Dan graduated and their second son, David Joseph Smith was born. Dan and Betty then returned to Shreveport to raise their family.

Dan was a Realtor for several years. Then he entered his lifelong career as a mortgage banker. He began with Oden Investments and Bridges Mortgage. Then he and his partner, Richard Clarke, formed a Mid-South Mortgage which later became Louisiana Bank and Trust Mortgage. Dan loved the mortgage business and was known and respected for his honesty and integrity in all mortgage dealings. He was always active in the Board of Realtors and Shreveport Mortgage Bankers Association in which he served a term as President. He also enjoyed being on the Board of the Shreveport Council for Family and Children's Services.

Dan was an active member of First United Methodist Church where he was a member for nearly 50 years. He was formerly a member of the Co-Wed Sunday School Class and then Dr. Webb Pomeroy's Bible Class. After retirement Dan became a Master Gardener and enjoyed the friendships he made there. Later he was a very active member of the Rivercities Garden Club, a couple's garden club.

Dan was a wonderful supportive father to Danny and David. He took the family on many vacations. Special memories were made as he taught the boys to snorkel and skin dive on family trips to the Florida Keys.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, DeWitt and Sara Smith, his beloved son, Daniel C. Smith, his brother, Dr. D. Rogers Smith, brothers-in-law, Mike Maloy and Tom Nash. Dan is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Betty; son, LT. Col. David J. Smith and wife, Cathy of Woodstock, GA; granddaughter, Olivia Smith of Woodstock, GA; sister, Patricia Maloy of Houston, TX; sisters-inlaw, Margaret Linn Smith of Prescott, AZ, and Mary Ann Nash of Richmond, VA; niece, Brenda Olson; Nephews, Bill Nash, Devon Maloy and wife, Pavlina of Czech Republic; other cousins; and his "Shreveport Family", Mary and Aubrey B. Wynn, Jr. and their family.

The family would like to thank the compassionate and caring staff on Wing 4 at the North West Louisiana War Veterans Home in Bossier City, and Dr. Roan Flenniken at Highland Clinic for his many years of care.

Dan will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He had an outgoing personality and was a great story-teller and loved to entertain with songs. He lived life to the fullest with honor and dignity.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Aubrey B. Wynn, Jr., Jay B. Jones, Chris Kalstone, Bob Richardz, Oliver G. Martin, and Larry Mulloy. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to The First United Methodist Church of Shreveport (Eternal Flame), 500 Common Street, Shreveport, LA 71101, or the Alzheimer's Association Louisiana Chapter, 3445 N. Causeway Blvd. Suite 902, Metairie, LA 70002-3770.
