Mario was a professor of civil engineering at the University of Louisville more than 40 years. For many years Mario was the recognized authority of structural dynamics and earthquake engineering. Mario's textbooks were widely used throughout the United States and several other counties - translated into six different languages.
Previously, Mario was the head of the department of statistics for the government of Chile. Mario's career spanned over 47 years - he taught mathematics at the University of Chile and conducted many seminars in the US and in Central and South America. For this work Mario received world renowned recognition including the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Cusco in Peru.
Mario was born in Guatemala in 1924 and was raised in Santiago, Chile. At the age of 13, Mario left school to help support his family. Mario became a very successful business man, and the owner of three stores in Chile. At the age of 22, Mario left the business world to return to school. Mario immigrated to the United States in 1958 and became a citizen in 1964, wanting to raise his family in this great country where people respected religious freedom. Mario loved his family, teaching, and will be remembered as a loving father, husband and "Saba" by his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Mario is preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Clara, his parents Benjamin and Salma, several siblings and his step-son Mark.
He is survived by his wife, four children, two stepchildren, and sixteen grandchildren. He leaves three great grandchildren, two sisters. a brother, and many nephews and nieces in both Los Angeles and Santiago, Chile. Mario will be missed by all who knew him.
