John was born in Vinalhaven, ME the son of Ebenezer Waterman Carver and Mary Stinson Carver. His family traveled down the Erie Canal and settled in Scott County Iowa. He and his brother Asher were well over 6 feet tall and traveled with Kit Carson as hunters for the party. He married Eliza Maria Nutting on June 1, 1858 in Hickory Grove by Justice of the Peace Alexander Wills. The couple had seven children; Amelia, Clara, Edith, Arthur, Willard, Ralph and Fred.
