Disaster Memorial. It was the second deadliest aviation accident in U.S. history. On the morning of November 12, 2001, just minutes after taking off from Kennedy Airport, American Airlines Flight 587 plunged to the ground in Belle Harbor, Queens New York. The crash killed 260 people on board and five people on the ground. The memorial includes a curved wall bearing the names of the 265 lives lost, many whom resided in Washington Heights, Manhattan. On the fifth anniversary November 12, 2006, the memorial on the Ocean Promenade was formally dedicated to honor the memory of those lost.
