Army Cpl. Bishop was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York. Bishop died of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was on dismounted patrol. Ryan was a 1992 graduate of Marshall High School where he played on the 1990 State Championship Football Team. He then attended Tyler Junior College where he graduated in 1994 with a degree in surveying and worked as a surveyor for 12 years. A strong sense of duty and desire to help others in need led Ryan to join the Army in February of 2005. He began his basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia where he was awarded the excellence in marksmanship medal for shooting a 40 out of 40, which set the camp record. Because of his outstanding abilities, Ryan often ended up teaching classes on weapons even as a private. His expertise was as a weapons specialist and he greatly wanted to work in Explosive Ordinance Disposal and later as a land surveyor for the military. Ryan was a wonderful person who was witty, sharp, full of charisma and larger than life. He was a great storyteller, even though he was known to embellish from time to time. He also loved to cook, listen to music and do anything outdoors. Ryan's greatest gift was his desire to help those in need. He saw the good in everyone and spent much of his time volunteering – yet asking nothing in return. He leaves behind his wife, Melanie.
