HOANG, JOSEPH VIET

Rev. Joseph Viet Hoang, age 57, died on December 2, 2012, from diabetes-related liver problems.

He was born the son of Phon Vinh Hoang and Hien Thi Ho, on May 6, 1955, in Binh Thuan, Vietnam. He became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1981. He completed studies for the priesthood at St. Patrick Seminary, Menlo Park, and was ordained for the Diocese of San Diego in 1994 by Bishop Robert H. Brom. Father Hoang served first for a year as associate pastor at St. Francis of Assisi, Vista, before transferring to minister as associate pastor at St. Therese, San Diego, in late 1995. The next year, he became associate pastor at Santa Sophia, Spring Valley. Father Hoang was made pastor of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha parish in Lakeside in 1999. While ministering in Spring Valley and then in Lakeside, he also served as general chaplain to the Vietnamese community. In 2003, Father Hoang was appointed briefly as associate pastor of Good Shepherd, before transferring to St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Oceanside as associate pastor. He returned to Good Shepherd in 2004 to act as associate pastor for two years. He was then named associate pastor of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, San Diego, in 2006. He became associate pastor of St. Rita, San Diego, in 2009, where Father Hoang ministered until his death.

The viewing will take place on Wednesday, December 5, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at El Camino Mortuary, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego. There will be a Liturgy of the Word in Vietnamese at 6 p.m. A vigil memorial Mass will be celebrated in Vietnamese on Thursday, December 6, 7 p.m., at Good Shepherd, 8200 Gold Coast Drive, Mira Mesa. The Funeral Mass in English will take place on Friday, December 7, at 11 a.m. at Holy Spirit Church, 2725 55th Street, San Diego.
