Religious Leader. Born in Hong Kong, Yee-Ming Tang entered into the priesthood with the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1930. In 1941, he was ordained a priest and adopted the name Dominic. After spending much of his early priesthood teaching in China, in 1950 he was appointed Apostolic Administer of Canton, China, and a year later was consecrated Bishop. Following the clamp down on the Catholic Church by the Communist government in China, he was arrested in 1958 and, for refusing to revoke his allegiance to the Pope, was imprisoned for the next twenty-two years. Following his release for medical reasons in 1980, and despite the protests and anger of the Chinese government, he was made Archbishop of Canton by Pope John Paul II in 1981 and would serve in exile until his death. He died from pneumonia at the age of 87 while he was visiting his friend, Cardinal Pin-mei Kung.
