My Great-Uncle.
Charles was the 2nd son that my G-Grandparents lost in WWI.
Charles was born in Ripon, Yorkshire, England before moving to Canada with his brother, Harold Compton and sister,Gladys Compton on July 13, 1914. His father Charles Compton came in 1913 as well as his sister, Mary Compton. His Mother, Susannah Winter Compton did not arrive until 1916.
He lied about his age when he signed up on December 28, 1915 - he put his birthdate as December 21, 1897 but he was really born in 1899, so he was not quite 16 years old.
He enlisted with the "Pals" Battalion. He was trained with that unit at Camp Borden until August 1916.
The family had received a letter not a week before he was killed saying he was well, but having a rough time of it, being up to his waist in mud and water.
Sadly, they did not know of his death until they received a call from the Toronto Star Newspaper.
