Dr. Herbert K. Cooper, Jr., 77, of 7 Ridgewood Drive, died Friday at home after a lengthy illness. Cooper began his medical practice in Lancaster in 1953. A specialist in diabetes and cardiology, he founded the Lancaster Chapter of the American Diabetes Association. In recogniation of his service, the Lancaster Chapter sponsers an annual lecture in his name. Cooper graduated from Lititz High School and the University of Pennsylvania. He received his medical degree from the University of PA Medical School in 1947. He also completed his graduate studies at the University of PA and served his internship at Lancaster General Hospital. After his internship, he served in the Korean War as an Army medic. He was a member of the Lititz Moravian Church and various state and local medical associations. Cooper was a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He served as director emeritus of the Cleft Palate Clinic of Lancaster and was medical director of Educator's Life Insurance Co. for 30 years. Born in Lititz, he was the son of the late Dr. Herbert Sr. and Mercedes (Miller) Cooper. He was married to Barbara S. (Bell) Cooper. Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Herbert K. III married to Barbara Cooper, and Robert Bell Cooper, both of Lancaster, and Thomas Alexander, married to Cheryl R. Cooper of Houston; seven grandchildren; a sister, Betty C. Long of Lancaster and a brother, John A. of Lancaster. The funeral wil be held at Lititz Moravian Church, Monday March 13, 2000 at 2 p.m with the Rev.Gary M. Straughan officiating.
