Hugh Archer's obituary noted that he was a Confederate veteran, though no official record of his service has been found. A "Hugh Archie" participated in the Civil War Battle of Lone Jack (Missouri) as part of a Confederate guerrilla unit, and it is likely that he and his younger brother William Archer served in such a manner. The two were part a guerrilla force under Lieutenant George Todd, and may have served in Quantrill's raid on Lawrence, Kansas.

He was born about 1834 in Tennessee, son of Isaac and Jane (Brown) Archer, and grew up in Platte County, Missouri. His family participated in some of the partisan political battles in neighboring Kansas, showing up with his father and brother-in-law on an 1855 voting list in that state.

Hugh and his younger brother John (who had served in the Missouri 1st Cavalry and lost an arm during the siege of Vicksburg) both moved to Texas after the war, and their father joined them about 1869 after their mother's death. Hugh remained in Sherman and raised his family there. He died in 1914.

Sincere thanks to Janie for having created this memorial, and for having provided the photo of Hugh's grave marker.
