Born Essex County, New Jersey. Married on September 22, 1875. Co. I.7th (also called 5th) Kentucky Cavalry. Enlisted at Danville, Kentucky on August 20, 1861. Severely wounded in the thigh and captured during the war. He was still in prison at the surrender. It was stated that he was "not a very good provider, did odd jobs as a painter, gambler and chicken fighter." Member of the J. W. Starnes Camp #134 of United Confederate Veterans.
Wife: Sarah Francis Wells Begbie, born September 15, 1843. Her Confederate widow's Pension #2984 TN filed December 7, 1909. She died October 18, 1933. They had two sons, Charles Jr. (1882 - 1964) and John (no dates).
