Earl Walter Beach was the son of Walter and Harriett Beach. He was born in Indiana and by 1860 had moved with his family to Chickasaw County, Iowa.

Earl was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a resident of New Hampton, Chickasaw County, Iowa, when he enlisted as a 4th Sergeant on 3 Oct 1861 at the age of 18 years. He mustered in Co H 4th Iowa Cavalry on 26 Nov 1861. Re-enlisted and re-mustered 11 Dec 1863. Promoted to Full Commissary Sergeant on 1 Mar 1864. Promoted to Full Quartermaster Sergeant on 1 Mar 1865. Earl mustered out on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.

After his discharge, he returned to Chickasaw County and married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Legge on 25 Dec 1865. They had four (known) children. Lillas, Earl Otis, and Nora May (Klauberg)(Murray) were born in Chickasaw County. Aileen (Camlin) was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1874. In 1880 the family lived in Lincoln County, Kansas. Earl's parents and one brother died and are buried in Lincoln County.

After the death of his parents, Earl returned to Chickasaw County. The 1897 Census shows he is a widow. Place and date of death for his wife is unknown. Earl's daughter, Nora May, married (Montiford Klauberg and John Murray), and settled in Montrose County, Colorado, where she is buried. Daughter Aillen married (Adonis Camlin) and settled in Chicago, where she is buried.

Earl was admitted to the Home for Disabled Veterans in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on 30 Nov 1911. His occupation was listed as "printer", he was a widower, and his nearest relative was his daughter Aileen, living in Chicago. He was discharged on 10 Apr 1912.

Earl's Civil War pension record lists his place of death as Chicago, Illinois. He may have been living with his daughter at the time of his death. He is buried in Montrose County, Colorado, beside his daughter Nora and his grandson, Alvin. Earl died at the age of 70 years, 5 months, and 19 days.
