Elizabeth was the first wife of Joseph B. May Sr. and the mother of his oldest three children, James William, Elizabeth, and John David May.

During the Revolutionary War Elizabeth and her friend, Sarah Jane (Campbell) MacLain, were banished from Charlestown, South Carolina by an edict issued 31 December 1781 by Col. Balfour for refusing protection from the British against the Continental Army and Militia. Together they took their children to Wilks County, Georgia. Elizabeth died soon after.
