John D. May served in the 13th Regiment, Nixon's Company, of Mississippi Militia during the War of 1812. He fought in the Creek Wars and was at the Battle of New Orleans. Per a family diary, John was supposed to be the sharpshooter who unhorsed General Packingham, causing his death.
