Captain Dahl lived with his wife, Sandy, and son Matthew in Denver, Colorado. Relatives said that the San Jose, California, native had wanted to fly since he was a young boy. He graduated from San Jose State University in 1980 with a degree in aeronautical engineering and joined United Airlines in 1984. In 1993, he became a standards pilot who trained and tested other pilots. He and his wife were to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary on September 14, 2001; they were scheduled to leave for a trip to London two days later. In order to accommodate these plans, Captain Dahl had moved up his flight schedule. His body was recoverEd and moved to Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Colorado for his final resting place.
