At the age of 23, in 1858, Allen immigrated to Texas where he enlisted on August 1, 1861, in Company F of the 4th Texas Infantry. Allen, on July 2, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg, was wounded in the right arm and taken captive in a field hospital at Gettysburg. He was confined to DeCamp General Hospital on the David's Island in New York Harbor, where, on September 17, 1863, he was part of a detachment of paroled and exchanged prisoners at Camp Lee, near Richmond, Virginia. From there, Allen was sent to Wayside Hospital, or General Hospital # 9 in Richmond, where he was admitted on September 25, 1863, without his right arm. He was then moved to another General Hospital, Howard's Grove, in Richmond. He spent the next few months recovering.
