J.T. fought in Bataan until American forces were compelled to surrender in April 1942. He was a survivor of the infamous Bataan Death March and endured being a prisoner of war for over three and a half years in Philippine POW camps: O'Donnell, Cabantuan, and Bilibid. He was liberated in Sept 1945 from POW camp Fukuoka No. 1, Japan where he was used as slave labor. He received an honorable discharge in 1946. J.T. and his wife were long-time members of the Wolf Island Primitive Baptist Church in Reidsville where he served as deacon and trustee.
