U.S. Senator. Wife of Alabama Governor Bibb Graves, she was the First Lady from the State of Alabama and the first woman in the U.S. Senator from Alabama. As a civic leader, she was trustee of Alabama Boys’ Industrial School Alabama, Birmingham and president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, (1915-17). She was also active in the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, in the Alabama Federation of Women’s Clubs and in the women’s suffrage movement. In 1937, she was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Hugo L. Black, serving until her resignation in 1938. Leaving politics, she lived in retirement until her death at age 82.
