Carlin had been born Walter Jeffreys but, when his father died at an early age his mother turned him over to her sister to be raised and they gave him their family name of Carlin. He and his wife Jeanette were passengers on the Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria when the ship collided with the Swedish liner Stockholm on July 25, 1956 and sank the next day. Mrs. Carlin was killed.
