Philadelphia Mayor. A World War I and World War II veteran, and a member of the American Democratic Party, who played an important part of the reform movement of post-World War II Philadelphia. He was elected to several political appointments, most notably as the 91st Mayor of Philadelphia from 1956 to 1962. He also twice ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Pennsylvania in 1950 and 1962. On July 25, 1956, he and wife Ann both survived the sinking of the ocean liner SS Andrea Doria after it collided with the MS Stockholm on July 25, 1956, off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. He died of a brain tumor in Philadelphia Hospital, at age 75.
