Sylvanus Holt Craven, 81, died Jan. 15, 2009 in Riverwood Center in Jacksonville, FL. Craven was born July 27, 1927 in Appling County and had resided in Hillard, FL for most of his life. He was a retired truck driver and was employed with Florida Rock Tank Lines before his retirement. Craven was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in WWII. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Rowe Craven, a daughter, Connie Johnson, and two sisters, Beatrice Orvin and Lucille Vaughn. He was the son of the late Benjamin Sylvanus and Mary Alice Jones Craven.

He is survived by a sister, Myrtice Orvin of Jacksonville, FL; care giver, Marie Sykes of Hillard, FL; step-sons, Glynn (Valerie) Smith of Wake Forest, N.C., Paul Smith of Wake Forest, N.C., Ronnie Smith of Wake Forest, N.C. and David Crowley of Jacksonville, FL; four grandsons, Robbie Nicholson, Dewayne Johnson, Allen Johnson and Roy Lee Johnson; step-granddaughter, Emily J. Smith; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18 at David E. Miles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Dowless officiating. Interment followed in Bethel Freewill Church Cemetery.
