Born in Albertville, Marshall County, Alabama. he was the 5th, and youngest child of Jesse "Warner" Davis and Iula Fullilove Davis.

He was given the nickname of "Dick" by his aunt Dora, because his whistle reminded her of a Dicky bird. Mercer left school in the 9th grade, but continued his education by a hands on school of learning. When his parents' home was lost in a fire, Mercer cleared the property then built a new home for them with his own hands.

While on medical R&R in California he met Geraldine Marie "Gerry" Logan at an USO party in Santa Barbara, despite a "rocky" relationship, the couple would wed on 19 Mar 1944 in Anaheim California. Geraldine was the eldest daughter of Marion Francis & Merle Evelynne "Meg" Griffith Logan of Long Beach, California.

Due to wounds he suffered, and an extreme case of malaria, Mercer did not return to combat, but was assigned as a an Instructor for Phillipines officers at Fort MacArthur, Los Angeles County, California.

The couple were transferred to New Jersey where they lived until 1946. When Gerry became pregnant. After suffering a miscarriage, Mercer requested a transfer back to California, where he was stationed at Fort MacArthur, in Los Angeles County.

On 11 Jun 1947, their son Richard Logan Davis was born at St Joseph Hospital in City of Orange, California.

Soon after Richard's birth, Mercer received orders for Salzburg, Austria, as part of Allied re-consruction troops. Gerry and Ricky would follow him 10 weeks later.

He received a honorable discharge in late 1948, and was on the list as "reactivated" Master Sergeant. He was assigned to the *** command in Korea in 1952. He returned home to California where he was transferred to the Army Training Command, Camp (now Fort) Gordon, Georgia.

In January 1954, he received a "clean bill of health" at his yearly physical. However within three months he developed blood clots in both legs and arms. Despite every effort to determine what was wrong, Mercer succumbed to a massive heart attack on 21 Jun 1954. The clot as "possibly" brought on after a biopsy of a blood clot under his left arm.

He was survived by his wife, Geraldine Marie Logan Davis (age31), their two children Richard Logan Davis (age 7) & Evelynne Marie Davis (age 5).

Mercer's father, Warner Davis had died in January 1949, in Albertville. On November 1st, 1954, his mother, Iula passed away after a four year struggle with Leukemia. According to their family, Iula was never told her son had died just five months before her.

Mercer's surviving family included his brothers, Vining Wortham "Wert" Davis & his wife, Annabelle Brannon Davis, of Decatur, Georgia, and Eric Craft Davis & his wife, Jimmie Davis also of Georgia and his sister, Charlotte Mayna Davis Chester of Albertville, Alabama.
