Hugo Hugues Frere "Frayer" Freer was one of the twelve "Huguenot Patentees" of the celebrated New Paltz Patent in Ulster County, New York granted by Sir Edmond Adros, September 29, 1677. He was a native of Herly-en-Boulonis, France as a young man, married Marie de la Haye, a native of Douaye, France. They married October 1660 in the French Congregation at Mannheim, Germany. She died in the plague of 1666 and Hugo married Jannetje Wibau. Hugo and Wibau came to America around 1675-1676.

It appears that the replacement stone the sexton engraved the year 1676 on was an error. Read on...

Suggested edit: Note: this is a replacement stone and not the original. It is likely erroneous as Hugo married Jannetje according to church records on January 22, 1667. His first wife, Marie de la Haye likely died in 1666 in Germany. Further supported by Abraham's baptismal record which names his parents as Hugo and Jannetje, January 19, 1668. Marie de la Haye and Hugo married on October 3, 1660. Hugo Freer's baptismal record of July 2, 1666 does name a mother Marie.
