Navy Cmdr Acevedo was assigned to the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command based in Tampa, Florida. Acevedo died of a heart attack working out in the gym while serving in Manama, Bahrain. Joseph was originally from the Bronx, New York. At the time of his death, he was assigned as the Logistics Requirements Officer for the Commander Logistics Force. The name of this fallen sailor was not made public until December 2004. Joseph leaves behind his wife, Yolanda, and two sons.
