Civil War Union Army Officer. He entered the Union Army as a captain in Company E, 82nd New York Volunteer Infantry on May 21, 1861. A little over a year later he was advanced to Lieutenant Colonel (May 26, 1862), and assumed commaned of the regiment after the May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville when Colonel Henry W. Hudson was dissmissed from the Army. He led his men in the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where on the second day of the engagement (July 2) he was shot in the head and killed while his men were defending Cemetery Ridge from the attacking troops under General James Longstreet. He had been commissioned Colonel, but died before ever being mustered in at that rank.
