Civil War Union Army Soldier, Historian. He enlisted as a Private in Company C, 5th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 19, 1861, and served with his regiment in the Battles of Williamsburg and Fair Oaks during the Peninsular Campaign, the Seven Days Battles, and the Battles of Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. At Chancellorsville he was severely wounded in the right leg, which necessitated first a long convalescence, then his transfer to the 12th Veterans Reserve Corps. He served with the VRC from December 1, 1863 to his discharge on August 19, 1864, having participated in the defense of Washington, DC during General Jubal Early's July 1864 strike into Maryland. During the war he kept a detailed illustrated diary of his experiences. In 1975 it was edited by David H. Donald and published as "Gone For A Soldier: The Civil War Memoirs of Private Alfred Bellard". It is most notable for being a first person, primary account of the Civil War life and combat experiences of a common front line soldier, and for its unflinching portrayal of the War.
