Civil War Union Army Officer. A native of County Queens, Ireland, he was commissioned Colonel and commander of the 9th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry on June 11, 1861, overseeing the regiments training and initial Union Army deployment. He led the unit in the Spring 1862 Peninsular Campaign, participating in the Siege of Yorktown, the Battle of Hanover, and the Seven Day’s Battles. In the July 1, 1862 Battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia, he was shot in the face during the Union repulse of the attacking Confederates. He lingered on for 12 days, dying of the wounds shortly after returning to his Boston home.
