At the Battle of Antietam Maryland, on September 17, 1862, he voluntarily left the rear station field hospital to attend wounded at the front lines. He started treating the soldiers where they fell in the line of enemy fire, despite being ordered to the rear he kept helping the injured until the assault position was secure.
