Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Union Army first as Captain of Company A, 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 81st United States Colored Troops. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on Marcg 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at the siege of Port Hudson, La." After the war he served as the Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic in 1882.
