Civil War Union Army Officer. He began his Civil War service with a commission of Captain and commander of Company A, 15th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 12, 1862. He served in this capacity until after the May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville. On May 24, 1863 he was promoted to Major, replacing the resigned Major Daniel Burrell. He participated in his commands battles in Virginia in 1864, enduring the brutal slaughter of his regiment at the May 1864 Battle of Spotsylvania. In the Fall of 1864, when his brigade had been attatched to General Philip Sheridan's Army of the Shenandoah, he was detailed to lead the 10th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry after it's commander, Lieutenant Colonel Charles H. Tay, was captured at the Battle of Fisher's Hill. He directed the 10th New Jersey up to the Octiber 19, 1864 Battle of Cedar Creek. There his brigade fought to maintain the Union position after Confederate General Jubal Early's stunning morning surprise attack. In the action Major Boeman was killed while attempting to steady his men.
