Eldest child of George W. Scott, an Irish immigrant from Dublin and his wife Nellie Allen Slocum Scott. Fred's father, George, died of stomach cancer when Fred was only four years of age. The young widow Nellie did all she could to feed and clothe her family, but there were many very difficult years. Fred was taken under the wing of relatives at Schaghticoke, New York and was given an education which he took great advantage of later in life, becoming a valued professor and Chairman of the Physics Department at Fresno State University in California prior to his retirement.
His obituary appeared in "The Fresno Bee" on April 11, 1982:
"Services for Frederic A. Scott, 79, of Fresno, a former Fresno State University professor will be held at 11 am Tuesday at Clovis Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Clovis Cemetery.
Mr. Scott died Saturday.
He was born in New York and moved to Fresno in 1957 to become chairman of Fresno State University's Physics Department. He retired in 1972.
Mr. Scott earned his bachelor of science degree at New York State College in Albany; his master's degree in physics at Lehigh University in eastern Pennsylvania; and his doctor's degree at Rice Institute in Texas.
Before joining the FSU staff, Mr. Scott headed the graduate fellowship program at the Hughes Laboratories in Southern California. He was chairman of the Lehigh University physics department and taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of New Hampshire.
During World War II he was a staff member in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Radiation Laboratories.
Mr. Scott was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church, Phi Beta Kappa and the American Association of Retired Persons.
Surviving are his wife, Sally; two sons, Blair of Fresno and David of Visalia; a daughter, Shelley Hudson of Reedley; and four grandchildren."
Fred's wife was the former Sarah Ruffin "Sally" Low of Sardis, Mississippi. They married at Belmont, Massachusetts in 1944.
