Funeral services will be Friday, June 2, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Rev. Jaye Johnson of Musserville United Methodist Church will officiate. Casketbearers will be Jon Askam, Steve Askam, Brian Askam, Aaron Askam, Craig Askam, Brad Askam, Lowell Baker and Jim Baker. Honorary casketbearers will be Harry Baker, Jerry Miller and Bob Adams. Burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation for Walter will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2006 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Musserville United Methodist Church in memory of Walter.
Walter James Askam was born August 30, 1918 in West Liberty, Iowa the son of Clark Sr. and Erma E. Finley Askam. On January 26, 1941, Walter was united in marriage to Leola B. James in West Liberty, Iowa.
Walter was employed by Alcoa for 17 years before retiring in 1983. He was a lifelong resident of Muscatine county and a member of the Musserville United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family.
Walter will be deeply missed by his wife, Leola of Muscatine; three sons, Gareth J. Akam and his wife, Anita of Davenport Iowa, Richard L. Askam of Oak Park, Illinois, and Keith D. Askam and his wife, Rose Mary of Monroe, Michigan; one brother, Leo Askam and his wife, Joanne of Muscatine; one sister Betty Birkhofer and her husband, Howard of Muscatine; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, Wilma, Marie, Dorothy, Florence, Helen and Margaret; and three brothers, Herbert, Lester and Clark Askam.
