Born the second of eight children of William Michael Lawrence & Anna Agnes Carroll.

He was a butcher by trade, following in his father's, grandfather's and great grandfather's footsteps.

William tragically died of a fractured skull per the Phila. Archives Death Index Card #22522.
William died along with eight other young men when a car driven by Edgar J. Shaw, 19, of 1310 Morris St., Phila. went over the edge of the 33d Street boulevard at Master Street. They fell 60 feet into Thomas O'Brien's coal yard. All nine died, six immediately, but William and Gordon H. Miller died on the way to the German Hospital, and one other, Thomas L. Nevin, lingered until dawn the next day before succumbing. The car Shaw was driving belonged to his father, James Shaw, who had bought it only a month before.

He is buried in New Cathedral Cemetery at Front & Luzerne or Sedgley (North & South entrances), Phila., PA in a lot in the name of Thomas Roach. There is no monument for either William or his sister Margaret, who is buried with him, but there is a monument for Thomas and Margaret Roach, who are brother-in-law and sister to William's mother Anna Lawrence. Also buried there are Annie Roach (spelled "Roche" in cemetery records), a niece to Anna, and William Carroll, a brother to Anna.
