Thomas Meehan was the second Company Commander of "Easy Company," 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. He was killed during the Battle of Normandy, when the C-47 Skytrain plane he was on was hit by German Anti-Aircraft fire over Beuzeville-au-Plain, approximately two miles south of the town of Sainte-Mere-Eglise. He was portrayed by Jason O'Mara in the HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers." On June 6, 2000, a memorial was established at the Beuzeville-au-Plain church to Meehan, and the other paratroopers killed when their plane was shot down.

Meehan--the great-grandson of the famous botanist and father of Philadelphia parks, Thomas Meehan--came from "a family of military heroes." His life story is chronicled in this May 2023 article by Mary Pomichter in aPhiladelphia newspaper, the Chestnut Hill Local:
