Leading Aircraftman Martin Beard, of No 1 Squadron Royal Air Force Regiment was killed during a routine foot patrol in the Al Waki district north of the British Base at Basra Airport, southern Iraq. He was evacuated by helicopter to a British field hospital but died from gunshot wounds. He was from Rainworth, Nottinghamshire, England and was due to get married after his tour of duty in Iraq, and had recently turned 20 years old. He had been with the No 1 Squadron of the Royal Air Force for less than a year. He leaves behind a loving family and fiancee.
