Corporal, frontline medical technician with 5th Field Ambulance based in Valcartier, Québec. Aged 28, he had deployed in the summer to serve with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces.
He was one of two Canadian soldiers and an Afghan interpreter killed when their LAV III light-armoured vehicle hit a roadside bomb about 40 km west of Kandahar city in the vicinity of Ma'sum Ghar. Three Canadian soldiers were also wounded in the explosion and evacuated by helicopter to the Multinational Medical Unit at Kandahar Airfield for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Cpl Beauchamp is survived by his wife Cpl. Dolorès Crampton, an ambulance technician in the Canadian Forces, who is also serving in Afghanistan. They lived in Pont-Rouge, QC for three years prior to deployment. Also left behind are his children Alexander and Josiann, parents Nicole and Robert Beauchamp, older brother David (Nancy) and other family members.
His father said Nicolas always dreamed of being a paramedic and was a proud soldier who believed in helping others.
Recipient of Sacrifice Medal (posthumous)
Seventy-three soldiers and one diplomat have now died since Canada first sent troops to Afghanistan in 2002.
Funeral service held on December 8, 2007 at Cathédrale de Saint-Hyacinthe- le-Confesseur in St-Hyacinthe QC.
