The castle was built on the site of an old manor house the oldest record of the estate was 1259. In about 1379 it passed to the Trevanion family. John Trevanion inherited it in 1703 and improved the house. In 1767 the male line became extinct, when William Trevanion died, the house passed to his sister's son John Bettesworth. His son John inherited the estate when he was 21 and changed his name to John Bettesworth-Trevanion. He built the castle close to the site of the old manor house. He became an M.P. in 1807. He overspent and was unable to pay his creditors, so Michael williams (1785-1858) bought the estate from his creditors in 1854. Williams and his son John Michael Williams (1813-1880)undertook repairs to the castle. After the death of John Michael in 1880, his son John Charles Williams(1861-1939) inherited the estate, marrying in 1884 the year Clara was married and died.
