Marshall was the second child and only son of Herbert and Anna "Koenig" Reed. Born in a small house just outside Benton, MO. When Marshall was about 3 the family home burned and they moved to East Carondelet, IL. Marshall attended the Catholic Grade School and later went to Dupo High School where he graduated in 1956.
Marshall joined the US Army on November 17, 1958 and trained as an Air Traffic Controller, a year later he married the former Rosanna M. Lurk on November 7, 1959 whom he had first met as a blind date the year before. The Army had told Marshall his Unit was going to Hawaii for a year and the plan was to take his new bride with him. However the Army changed their mind and Marshall was sent to So. Korea serving there from 1960-1961, Rosanna was not allowed to go and remained in St. Louis. During his time in Korea he got to witness firsthand the events that saw So. Korean Leader Sigmon Rhee ousted from office. On his return to the US he was stationed at Fort Sheridan, IL., where he was discharged at the end of his service on May 16, 1962.
Marshall had been accepted to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an Air Traffic Controller and posted to Chicago O'Hare Airport. Marshall would remain at this job until 1967 when he requested a transfer to the Defense Mapping Agency (DMAC) in St. Louis to be closer to family. With his wife Rosanna and now 3 children Marshall returned to Dupo, IL and started with DMAC, however his love for being an Air Traffic Controller soon over powered his need to be close to his boyhood home and he accepted a posting back to the FAA this time at the In-Route Center in Memphis, TN. So in the Spring of 1971 Marshall loaded the family and moved to Memphis.
In 1980 and 1981 events took place which would result in Marshall becoming an active participant in the August 1981 Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) strike which resulted in his as well as some 11,000 + other Controllers termination by President Ronal Reagan on August 5, 1981. For several years Marshall and many of the others attempted to seek re-instatement back to the FAA through the legal system. Some were able to return but Marshall was not one of them.
With savings Marshall and Rosanna bought a tandem axel gravel truck and hired a fellow PATCO member to drive it. This lasted for a couple of years until the ban that President Reagan imposed on all striking federal workers was lifted and Marshall returned to DMAC in St. Louis.
Marshall retired in 1993 from DMAC and him and Rosanna now empty nesters moved to Hernando, MS. Marshall and Rosanna enjoyed the country life and entertaining their growing number of grandchildren by this time. They made numerous new friends and were very active in their community, Marshall served as President of their local owners association and Rosanna assisted with sveral committees. Rosanna however was diagnosed with cancer in mid 2004 and passed just a few months later. Marshall continued as a widower and soon found the local Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7531 as a new way to spend his time and energy. Marshall severed a Post Commander as well as many of the other top positions with Post.
Marshall enjoyed spending time with his family which now includes 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren with a fourth due any day. His last days were spent living at his sons, Scott and Steven which included visits from numerous family members including his Daughter Lynne and his younger sister Betty Jo. His last days were filled with the knowledge he was loved and respected by his family and that he will be missed.
