Barbara Jeanne Brandon was born October 15, 1951 in Charlotte, Michigan, the daughter of Henry and Roberta (Thornton) VanDeMoortel. Barb had a personality that no one will forget. Her outgoing personality and her love of helping others endeared her to many people. To say that Barb was a "Very Social" person was an understatement. Chuck remembers that on more than one occasion as they were returning home, they may pass by a friends home and she would say "Lets stop by there just a minute to..." Chuck knew it was going to be an hour. But it was always worth it. She reveled in giving directions whether at home or in the car. Sometimes she gave more than one set of directions, just in case one way wouldn't work. Barb and Chuck spent Saturday nights for the last 40 years with their friends Bill and Martha playing cards. Barb enjoyed camping trips when the girls were younger, and later, the annual trip in June to St. Ignace to celebrate their anniversary and enjoy the car show. She always had a sense of adventure. That sense even led her to try bungee jumping in Florida, once. Most of her enjoyment came from her daughters, and grandchildren. Family was always important to her. Probably her favorite past time was enjoying the backyard "bird sanctuary" with Chuck and their dog Baxter, the Schnoodle-dog. Barb worked as an Eligibility Specialist with the State of Michigan until her illness forced her to retire. Barb became a very active and staunch supporter of the Charlotte "Relay for Life" Event. In 2009 she was named the Honorary Chairperson of the Relay. She will be missed by all of her fellow Relayers. Barb, the loving Wife, Mother, Grammy, Friend and Cancer Warrior, lost her valiant struggle against Cancer on Tuesday,February 23, 2010 at the age of 58 with her family by her side, as they have been throughout her illness. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Charles "Chuck" Brandon; daughters, Chara L. Grinold, and Bobbi J. Brandon (Kimberly Thompson); grandchildren, Finn Grinold, Jaigen Brandon and Taylor Thompson; and many other friends and family who she loved with all her heart.
