Friday, hours before his death, McKeithen resigned as secretary of state from his hospital bed.
The resignation was not announced Friday.
"It has been the honor of a lifetime to have served Louisiana and the great people of this state for so many years," McKeithen said in the resignation letter released by his office. "Because of recent complications from my injury in February, I regretfully can no longer serve."
McKeithen grew up in politics. His father, John McKeithen, served as Louisiana's governor from 1964 to 1972.
McKeithen is survived by his wife Yvonne and four children: Marjorie Ann, Marianne May, Rebecca Ann and John Jesse.
His brother, Jessie Jay, was killed in a 1998 fire in Columbia. John McKeithen died in 1999; his widow, Marjorie Howell Funderburk McKeithen, died in March 2004.
